Hypothesis

Trance types will be associated with societal characteristics (47-68).

Variables significant at the 0.001 level: settlement pattern, stratification, slavery, jurisdictional hierarchy beyond the local level, estimated size of population, kin groups, mode of marriage, and cousin marriage. Variables significant at the 0.05 level: mean size of local community, family form, marriage form, and segregation of adolescent boys. Variables significant at the 0.10 level: matrilineal vs patrilineal succession to office of local headman. Highest association (0.4453) between trance types and estimated size of population.
