The presence of slavery is correlated to the occurrence of "open resources" (247).
Note
Open resources occur when agricultural land is easy to maintain and when little capital or complex technological knowledge is necessary for agricultural production. Open resources do not occur when all land fit for cultivation has been appropriated. (229).
