Hypothesis
The most frequently cited reason for capital punishment will be disposal of a wrongdoer (p. 45).
Note
Of the 26 cultures for which there was data regarding motivation for capital punishment, 18 (61%) have this reason. Other reasons were revenge (9/26, 35%), to deter further crime (5/26, 19%), to show the power of the king (2/26, 8%), and to wipe out an insult to honor (1/26, 4%).
