  1. "As for how warfare might affect residence, we found that matrilocal societies have purely external warfare (warfare only with other societies) much more often than patrilocal societies" (593)Ember, Melvin - The conditions favoring matrilocal versus patrilocal residence, 1971 - 2 Variables

This study analyzes several variables that influence matrilocal versus patrilocal residence. Results indicate that the traditional assumption that division of labor determines residence was not supported. Rather, results suggest that internal warfare favors partilocal residence and matrilocal residence is favored by purely external warfare if division of labor is matridominant.

  2. ". . . control[ling] on the presence versus absence of migration, the relationship between type of warfare and residence does not disappear" (139)Ember, Carol R. - An evaluation of alternative theories of matrilocal versus patrilocal residence, 1974 - 3 Variables

This paper investigates the relationship between marital residence and warfare. The author evaluates two theories proposing opposite causalities: one, that internal warfarecauses patrilocality; the other, that residence comes first and influences type of warfare. The author presents a new model emphasizing the role of population size in determining type of warfare, which in turn affects marital residence. However, the role of migration in determining marital residence is also considered.

  3. "Our hypothesis is that men will do more than women in subsistence unless warfare prevents them from doing so" (579)Ember, Melvin - The conditions favoring matrilocal versus patrilocal residence, 1971 - 2 Variables

". . . the relationship between migration and residence controlling on the presence versus absence of purely external warfare . . . becomes nonsignificant in both control conditions" (138)Ember, Carol R. - An evaluation of alternative theories of matrilocal versus patrilocal residence, 1974 - 3 Variables

  5. Societies where slaves are primarily used as social capital are more likely to be polygynous (246).Pryor, Frederic L. - The origins of the economy: a comparative study of distribution in primitive..., 1977 - 2 Variables

Considerable disagreement exists in regard to the origin and distribution of economic phenomena such as money, slavery, markets, exchange, and imbalanced transfers. Here the author utilizes a worldwide cross-cultural sample of 60 pre-industrial "societies" to empirically test many economic hypotheses, with a focus on distributional mechanisms and institutions.

  6. Polygyny will be associated with the presence of slaves owned as social capital (p. 33).Pryor, Frederic L. - A comparative study of slave societies, 1977 - 2 Variables

This article tests a broad hypothesis that slavery is an inevitable stage in society's economic development. The author rejects this hypothesis; he argues that there are two main types of slavery (slaves for economic capital or social capital) and each type has its own set of social and politcal determinants. Overall, the power dynamic between husbands and wives is thought to be a key predictor of slavery.

  7. Certain characteristics of societies will be significantly correlated in the same direction in both of Murdock's data sets.Rudmin, Floyd Webster - Cross-Cultural Correlates of the Ownership of Private Property: Two Samples ..., 1995 - 55 Variables

The present study aims to evaluate correlations of private property from two of Murdock's datasets, one of 147 societies (1981) and the other of 312 societies (1967). Altogether the author tested 146 variables coded by Murdock against variables regarding the ownership of land and of movables drawn from Murdock (1967), Simmons (1937), and Swanson (1960). In total, there were 51 statistically significant correlations between private property ownership and other variables. Additionally, the author summarizes the results from this article and the two that preceded it stating that throughout all of the correlations he ran, the practice of agriculture, the use of cereal grains, and the presence of castes and classes were the only variables that predicted private property in all of the datasets that were utilized.

  8. Internal warfare will decrease with increasing external warfare, intercommunity trade, and patrilocal residence (6).Grueter, Cyril C. - On the emergence of large-scale human social integration and its antecedents..., 2014 - 4 Variables

This article investigates whether external warfare, intercommunity trade, and female exogamy lead to more amicable intercommunity relationships. Intercommunity amicability is considered a historical facilitator of the large-scale integration of human groups. The absence of internal warfare is used as a measure for intercommunity amicability.

  9. "If a particular sex does most of the work in subsistence activities, the pattern of residence should tend to localize consanguineally related members of that sex" (571)Ember, Melvin - The conditions favoring matrilocal versus patrilocal residence, 1971 - 2 Variables

  10. Agricultural economy type (Herding-Plus, Egalitarian, Individualistic, or Semi-Marketized) will be associated with the presence of certain political institutions. (116)Frederic L. Pryor - Economic Systems of Foraging, Agricultural, and Industrial Societies, 2005 - 15 Variables

The second and third parts of this book classify the economic systems of foraging and agricultural societies in the SCCS based on correlations between their institutions of property an distribution. These economic types are then examined for relationships with other social, political, demographic, and environmental factors in order to draw tentative conclusions regarding the origins of the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions. The fourth part of the book uses cross-national data to examine similar associations in industrial/service economies, and is not included here.
