  1. Societies outside the West, and Western influence, practice pubic hair removal/retention.Craig, Lyndsey K. - Pubic Hair Removal Practices in Cross-Cultural Perspective, 2018 - 1 Variables

Researcher's examine the presence of pubic hair removal (PHR) and retention in a cross-cultural setting, looking to see if such practices exist outside of the West, where it is well documented. Data from societies with PHR or retention from the eHRAF World Cultures sample were analyzed. Results indicate that PHR or retention exists cross-culturally without influence from the West. Commonly practiced for hygiene, women remove or retain pubic hair more often than men, with the main methods for removal being plucking.

  3. There will be a relationship between the presence of circumcision in male initiation rites and presence or absence of foreplay (6).Gray, J. Patrick - Cross-cultural factors associated with sexual foreplay, 1980 - 2 Variables

This article examines reasons for the variation in sexual foreplay practices cross-culturally. Results suggest that exclusive mother-child sleeping arrangements is significantly associated with the presence of foreplay.

  4. Societies in which girls remain in the domestic unit with their mothers 50 percent or more (matirlocal or bilocal) are positively associated with presence of female initiation rites (840)Brown, Judith K. - A cross-cultural study of female initiation rites, 1963 - 2 Variables

This article discusses initiation rites for girls. Specifically explored are the reasons why the ceremonies are observed in some societies and omitted in others and what the variations between societies demonstrates.

  5. "In societies practicing patrilocal residence, in which there is also an exclusive mother-infant sleeping arrangement, female initiation rites will subject the initiate to extreme pain in the form of a genital operation or extensive tattooing" (843)Brown, Judith K. - A cross-cultural study of female initiation rites, 1963 - 3 Variables

  6. There will be a positive association between slavery and mining/quarrying, smelting, or metalworking.Hrnčíř, Václav - Archaeology of slavery from cross-cultural perspective, 2017 - 4 Variables

The authors examine correlations between slavery and variables that can potentially be detected archaeologically. The authors do not test specific hypotheses, but aim to explore the variables in a broader sense. As such, the authors use a grounded theory approach to data analysis in order to examine trends that emerge from the data itself.

  9. Human populations will spend less time grooming than expected based on nonhuman primate patterns (2).Jaeggi, Adrian V. - Human grooming in comparative perspective: People in six small‐scale societi..., 2017 - 1 Variables

Grooming of conspecifics is thought to play an important social role among nonhuman primates, but the function and relative importance of such grooming among humans is unknown. Here the authors compare time spent grooming and conversing among six small-scale societies with grooming data from 69 nonhuman primate species. They test the hypothesis that conversation evolved among humans as an alternative way to obtain the social benefits (such as building and maintaining social alliances) of grooming in large groups.

  10. "If one limits the definition of male initiation rites to only those ceremonies characterized by both a genital operation and seclusion, a very strong relationship emerges between these male rites and those female initiation ceremonies which [cause pain to initiate]" (845)Brown, Judith K. - A cross-cultural study of female initiation rites, 1963 - 2 Variables

This article discusses initiation rites for girls. Specifically explored are the reasons why the ceremonies are observed in some societies and omitted in others and what the variations between societies demonstrates.
