  1. Dowry will be associated with societies that are agricultural but have low female subsistance labor (1000).Gaulin, Steven J.C. - Dowry as female competition, 1990 - 3 Variables

This study tests two models that predict the presence of dowry cross-culturally: the female competition model and the labor-value model. Results suggest that both models are predictive of dowry, however discriminant analysis finds the female competition model to be superior.

  2. Societies with EIM or Ecologically Imposed Monogamy (monogamy combined with egalitarian resource structure) will have lower sexual stature dimorphism than those practicing polygyny or Socially-Imposed Monogamy (SIM, monogamy in highly stratified societies). (471)Gaulin, Steven JC - Human marriage systems and sexual dimorphism in stature, 1992 - 3 Variables

The researchers operationalize new measures of Socially Imposed Monogamy (SIM) and Ecologically Imposed Monogamy (EIM) using scores from Murdock's (1986) Ethnographic Atlas in order to reevaluate Alexander et al.'s (1979) findings that sexual stature dimorphism is higher in SIM (monogamous and highly stratified) and polygynous societies compared to EIM (monogamous and egalitarian) ones. The expected associations between marriage system and sexual dimorphism are not robustly significant; however, an interaction effect is discovered between marriage system and stratification with regard to dimorphism.

  3. Polygyny will be positively related with degree of sexual stature dimorphism (471).Gaulin, Steven JC - Human marriage systems and sexual dimorphism in stature, 1992 - 2 Variables

  4. High paternal confidence leads to high investment by a man in his wife's children; low paternal confidence leads a man to channel his investment elsewhere (304).Gaulin, Steven J.C. - Paternal confidence and paternal investment: a cross cultural test of a soci..., 1980 - 6 Variables

Using paternal investment theory, the authors examine the relationship between paternal confidence and paternal investment in humans.

  5. Man's preference to invest in his sisters' children rather than his wives' is positively associated with low paternal confidence (302).Gaulin, Steven J.C. - Paternal confidence and paternal investment: a cross cultural test of a soci..., 1980 - 2 Variables

Using paternal investment theory, the authors examine the relationship between paternal confidence and paternal investment in humans.

  6. Social stratification will be associated with the origins and transmission of female genital modification. (174)Ross, Cody T. - The Origins and Maintenance of Female Genital Modification across Africa, 2016 - 2 Variables

The researchers develop and compare two evolutionary models to evaluate the association between social stratification and female genital modification(FGMo) in a cross-cultural African sample, theorizing that social hierarchy creates competition for high-value males in which FGMo acts as a costly demonstration of paternity certainty. Although the null model outperforms the stratification model when applied to empirical data, an association between FGMo and stratification is found in the expected direction. The authors suggest that while stratification may be an important factor in the de novo origins of FGMo, spread and persistence of the practice subsequently become more heavily dependent on other selective forces.

  7. Trance types will be associated with societal characteristics (47-68).Bourguignon, Erika - A cross-cultural study of dissociational states, 1968 - 14 Variables

The expressed purpose of the present publication is to provide a typology of institutionalized dissociational states on a world-wide basis, using biological, situational, and cultural parameters. The study is comprised of field work, literature review, ethnographic research, and cross-cultural statistical analysis. The researchers use these findings to aid in the construction of cross-cultural theory, and to provide a platform for further work on dissociational states to continue.

  8. Distribution of marriage transactions will be associated with social stratification such that dowry is more common in stratified societies (296-7).Schlegel, Alice - Marriage transactions: labor, property, status, 1988 - 2 Variables

This paper proposes that marriage transactions are mechanisms by which households meet labor needs, distribute property, and maintain or enhance status. The authors find that type of marriage transaction is related to subsistence type and social stratification. In particular, bridewealth is more common where property is limited while dowry is more common among property-owning classes.

  9. Foraging economy type (Classic, transitional, human-wealth oriented, intangible-wealth oriented, politically oriented, and physical-wealth oriented) will be associated with certain social structural characteristics (50).Frederic L. Pryor - Economic Systems of Foraging, Agricultural, and Industrial Societies, 2005 - 13 Variables

The second and third parts of this book classify the economic systems of foraging and agricultural societies in the SCCS based on correlations between their institutions of property an distribution. These economic types are then examined for relationships with other social, political, demographic, and environmental factors in order to draw tentative conclusions regarding the origins of the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions. The fourth part of the book uses cross-national data to examine similar associations in industrial/service economies, and is not included here.

  10. Male contribution to subsistence will be negatively associated with percent of polygynous women among foragers (292-3).Marlowe, Frank W. - The mating system of foragers in the standard cross-cultural sample, 2003 - 3 Variables

This article examines variation in polygyny among foragers. Empirical analysis suggests that the level of male provisioning influences mating systems: higher male contribution to subsistence is associated with monogamy. The influences of pathogen stress, male-male competition, and male coercion are also considered.
